I’m reading about gardening and I want to get going! Way too early of course, but you can always make plans. I’ve always dreamed about a luscious garden with gorgeous flowers and herbs. I love cottage gardens and actually, I’m really in love with Hobbit gardens like in Lord of the Rings. I would love to have one of those. The whole atmosphere of Hobbiton makes me happy! I have had the intention for years now to make a garden like that, but somehow it all comes to nothing. I have plenty of books on gardening, herbs, edible gardens, permaculture and so on but when it comes to the real deal, I get stuck. I find it hard to make a good plan for my garden, it’s just not my natural born talent.

I was talking about it the other day with Nicolette of the Gasfabriek, I showed her pictures of those lovely Hobbit gardens with overgrown garden fences and cosy garden paths and flowers – lots of flowers. Well, she said, you can make a lot of it with just some plants in pots, right? Of course! Maybe I should start with that. The ground here isn’t drained, it’s thick clay soil and when it rains heavily there are puddles everywhere. Raised borders maybe the answer, but how? I don’t have a fortune to spend. ‘Maybe you could post an appeal for pots?’ Nicolette said. A lot of people have old pots in the shed that aren’t being used, what if they bring a pot for you on an open day? That’s brilliant! So here it is, if you happen to have one or two nice big plant pots or baskets and plan on coming to my open house, I would be really happy!

That reminds me, I need to be careful with what I write, ha-ha. The other day I wrote in a blog that if people really want to bring a present when visiting a Tiny House, but don’t want the owners to be buried under stuff, they should bring something that can be used up. Like a Tony Chocolonely bar, that’s always good – is what I wrote. The last open day I got four of them! Oh dear and I can’t stay off it; I’m going to weigh a ton(y)! But really, you don’t have to bring anything, I’m just happy to see you. The next open day will be on February 11th, a week later than usual but on the 4th I’m busy judging the design contest Tiny Collective Spaces of BAI Den Bosch. Also big fun!

But all right, back to gardening. A while ago Ties offered his help on a garden-design for me; I think I should take him up on that. Last year I started with a bordered herb garden and 2 bordered vegetable gardens. I plan on doing a lot more this year. I’m reading a book by Alys Fowler on edible gardens. So inspiring! I’m even thinking about making a little tunnel greenhouse. My dad used to have one of those and maybe he still has the poles for it. I’ll ask him! There’s plenty of room for a little greenhouse here, and with a little luck I can start sowing next month. Or am I being too optimistic? ;)

Although spring is a long time away, I’ve already got the gardening jitters.
